Bill, for some reason, I don't think you'll have to retire and go into another business because of RoR.

Look, nobody is suggesting that RoR isn't being used in places of where Java would have been used in the past. But the same argument could be made for PHP and SavioML (coming in the future!). But the degree to which vendors, and their customers are invested in Java makes it difficult for RoR to have a serious impact on Java revenues....

Savio, with regards to RoR, if its a "First they laugh at you" we're in that stage. If we end up losing to RoR, I will retire and go into another business...

Maybe it's something as simple as the fact that JBoss didn't have a scalable business model, aka some sort of license revenue business. Because they only sold service and support, there was no way to get a reasonable payback on the 40x multiple that RedHat paid for them.

Bill, I totally agree with you.

Mr. Chowdhry of Global Equities Research seems to think that RoR is a threat to you guys (and likely to other JEE servers?). I find that amusing.

Somehow, I very much doubt that anyone at RH/JBoss is losing sleep over RoR ;-)

Huh? Ruby, RoR a threat to JBoss? FYI, there was no ulterior motive for my blog. I seriously don't like Ruby or any type-unsafe language. I hate this idea that if I criticize something I think it is a threat to JBoss. Maybe I just don't like the technology, ya think?

I like some of the idioms that RoR is pushing. Do I like REST? Yes. Do I like zero turnaround development? Yes. Do I like Ruby? no. Do I think some of their ideas on persistence is childish and naive and completely unscalable? yes.
